Blog#3:Religion

Hi! This is Natsumi Akita.  Many people may know that news, I want to share opinions in religon with you.
In December 31st 2011, Makoto Hirata presented himself at the police station. And, Naoko Kikuchi also  arrested in July 3. Please look at this movie.

It is a movie of Aum Shinrikyo. What do you think about this movie?
That recent surprising happenings seems to make Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway being solved.  Sarin incident happened in 1995. In this case, 13 people were killed and many people got serious injuries. Even now, injured people are still suffering from damage in both physical and psychological. Not only in Japan but all over the world, there are so many incidents caused by differences in religion, for example, 9.11 and 2011 Norway attacks. 9.11 was caused by Taliban, and Norway attacks was caused by Anders Behring Breivik, who hates Muslim.
If you want to know it more, please click here. This website shows about 9.11.
I think it is very sorrow that many innocent people are killed by intolerance in religon. I think religon should be extinct because religion  cause injury accidents. On the other hand, I know that humans cannot live without relying on someone like Gods. I can't say that believing  in Gods is good or bad. It is difficult to prevent from happening.  I want you to think about incidents caused by some religion groups.

  1. Harsh comment, but I find this serious business. I will not compromise.

Note, I am not exactly atheist, but it would be convenient to consider me as such. I have studied many religions in the sense of socio-politics and philosophy. I have interacted with people of varying religions and cultures. Read the following with that in mind.

Religion is not such a simple issue. Religion doesn't exist simply because people have to resort to God, and wanting religion to become extinct is a typical form of religious intolerance, especially held by Japanese people who believe they are pseudo-atheists without knowing anything about religion at all. I would advise you to moderate your thoughts before you become a person who cause problems regarding religious intolerance.

First of all, Aum and Taliban are a minority when it comes to cults/religion in modern day society. They stand out because of the infamous ordeals that were spread by media worldwide, but most cults/religions do not go to the extent of such radical/extremist ideals. You cannot render all religions the same as Aum and Taliban, and therefore should avoid offending other religious ideals.

Yes, if you do look back in history, especially Europe and the Middle East, you find there were many conflicts ranging from petty chronic warfare to full-throttle continental wars, as well as obstruction of technological process partially caused by religion. However, religion is also a paragon of human motivation, and has been the core provider for various political/economic infrastructures that would counteract much of its demerits.

When we discuss religion, science is usually brought up as a sharp contrast, but fundamentally speaking, science is a religion itself. Science is, at its root, merely a consolidation of assumptions that happen to satisfy the human race. It has brought up as many merits and demerits as religion has, and will continue to do so. Blindly believing in science is no different from blindly believing in whatever god you think will bring you happiness.

Philosophy, on the other hand, is a type of religion that only involves yourself. Rather, religion is any type of philosophy that resorts to the human instinct of collectivism. A philosophy becomes a religion once multiple people believe in the same abstract code of conduct. Deviation causes schisms, not only in the way Catholicism and Protestantism were divided, but also in the way Judaism and Islam were divided as well. However, they are all derived from the same origin: a personal thought on existential identity and moral conduct. If you do not have a philosophy of any sort, you will experience moral decay quicker than any zealot of God.

Religion, along with any reason you can mention for death, are all simply a part of human nature. Blaming all religions for killing "innocent" people, is only segregating religion, which includes all of the innocent religious persons involved, from other equal causes. Religion is a right, no different from philosophy or personal identity, that every human being is entitled to, and I find it rather naive to wish for religion to become extinct.

Think about all of the cultural merits Japan has had from shintoism and buddhism. Yes, Japanese people may not consider hatsumoude or shrines/temples to be any more than tradition or tourist attractions these days, but these events and architectural sites, along with numerous others I could mention, were undoubtedly made possible by religion. They are inevitably a part of cultural identity. You cannot just remove all of these merits from religion while leaving all of the demerits within religion.

I would advise you reconsider your hypocritical statement about religious intolerance/wanting religion to be extinct, and study more about the pragmatic/fundamental definition of religion before you go about offending not only innocent followers, but also those who have actually given deep thought about existentialism.

I hit the "4096 max character count" so I had to relent a bit.

  2. As for the video, it's as hilarious as GO GO VOTE. Note that the video I linked was officially made and released by the Japanese government, meaning our tax money was used. You can see how they are fundamentally the same thing, trying to achieve the same effect through brainwashing advertisements. GO GO VOTE probably does a far better job than the Aum Video, which epicly fails in just about all aspects of what a song needs, but understand that it certainly isn't just Aum doing that sort of thing. As a side note, the government released a 2011 version of it as well, and the video is supposed to be aimed towards 20-year-olds. This video series could spark a whole other topic on its own, which you might want to consider thinking about as well.

  4. Thank you for your comment. But I am sorry that I couldn't see the linked video which you recommended. I think I am not a member of niconico movie, so I couldn't see it.
I know that religion is very difficult to discuss or explain. And I think religion is not easy to say, forever. I accepted your opinion on religion. I am very pleased that you gave me another viewpoint about religion. Thank you!

  6. Hi! This is Koichi.

I think religion has a possibility to change people even if they are clever. Some members of Aum Shinrikyo graduated from University of Tokyo. The other day, Takahashi Katsuya was arrested in "manga kissa". This mean all members are arrested.

It is said that Japanese has no religion, so we should have more opportunities to think about religion. In my highschool, we have religion class. Do you have some opportunities like this?

  7. Bringing out Tokyo University students as examples of clever people is so typical of Japanese people, yet they don't realize that the current corrupt and rusted political system is still being stubbornly held up by these so-called "clever Todai students". The term "clever" does not suit Japanese people as a whole, because they don't have the ability to apply knowledge to anything new or innovative, relatively regarding what they get from educational policies.

The only people saying Japan has no religion is current Japanese people themselves, which is by all means a complete prevarication.

  8. This is a very difficult problem and there will probably not be a right answer. I myself do not think that religions are a bad thing. What I think wrong, are the believers who uses religions as excuses to do what they want, the religion itself has no meaning for harm. If someone was murdered by a knife, you can't say that the knife is bad.
I believe in Jesus. And from my view, I feel anger to Aum. Making religions to control people is only an evil thing, an insult to people who has been saved by God, like me.
