Blog #1:My Golden Week

by Koichi

I'll tell you my Golden Week. During that holidays, I visited Gunma as a member of ESS(English Speaking Society). We stayed an old inn, or in Japanese ryokan. What I enjoyed the most in that stay was sports festival. See the photo below.
This is my team. We enjoyed some kinds of sports, such as volleyball, dodgeball and jump rope. We won the second prize. After that, we had BBQ. It was very delicious, but there was a sad point. Can you find something strange from the photo below?
The strange point is we were eating in a tent. So that means it was a rainy day;-( Although it was rainy, I enjoyed the event, of course!!
The next day we came from Gunma, we had an event of KUEL(Kanto universities ESS League). That event was held for freshmen. In the event, freshmen made some teams and discuseds some themes. I was suprised when my team number was decided because mine was NO.1! They are my NO.1team members.
I had a good time with them. I want to see them again.
This is my Golden Week. these were fantastic days!! If you have interest in my club, please visit ESS website.

  1. You have to put Blog #1: in your title if you want it to count towards your assignment. Also, run your article through a spell-checker. There are quite a few spelling errors for an ESS member, don't you think? "Ww" "prise" "althoegh" "universuties" just to name a few.

I'm an English major, and I really didn't expect my first year of Gakushuin to pass by with only 3 hours of actual English spoken every week. The Japanese "English major" (失笑) is worthless, bluntly put. I don't see the point in being satisfied with reading Huck Finn in Japanese and thinking you know English literature. Rather, that kind of thinking is rude to English-speaking cultures, because translations are fraud at best. What is the purpose of an English major if it's not to produce English-speaking/English-comprehensive adults for future social benefits? I mean, really, I can write a damn long thesis on this.

Japan's education system in general has to be ameliorated, or else... Japan might be degraded to a second-world country in the next century, who knows. What is certain is, Japan is still stuck in 20th century thinking.

I'm not in any club, nor did I plan to be at first, but I might consider joining if the amount of English used during college doesn't increase at all.

    1. Do not put all your expectations on what is offered in your classes. University is time to be independent and seek your own opportunities, using the university as a springboard.
Your criticism of the English major is too harsh and is offensive for public consumption. Please revise.

  2. Hello! This is Natsumi.
    I enjoyed reading your blog.
I'm very happy because you had an important experience as a ESS member. Unfortunately,I can't join your club because I already belongs to syourinji kempo club, but, through reading your essay, I began to I have to be more active in speaking English without being afraid of making mistakes.
I hope you to enjoy school life as a member of ESS for 4 years!

  3. A club camp...I have never been to one. I don't know about camps, but I could see that you had a great time from your photos. I hope it would be a good weather when you go to your next camp!
